Tried a few positions, Is on the drops considered best? Weighting the front wheel staying loose on the back the right way? Using 44cm ergo bars.
That worked best for me. I improved it a bit by fitting a set of Salsa Woodchipper bars. These flare out a bit and seem to give a better position when descending.

wood hoppers look good,but would prefer a flat section at the bottom.

Lack of experience judging steep rough descents on a CX bike. Off road drops on a MTB are generally higher, less bum in the air, so less inclined to have an OTB.

Right in the hooks feels a bit more secure than on the hoods. On the hoods I sometimes find myself wrapping my little finger around the back of the bars which seems to help.
