Friend of mine has these hubs and the cones are loose. Spent a little time trying to sort this yesterday but the drive side/cassette side looked like it had a locknut missing. Any advice on nipping them up would be appreciated. Done a Youtube trawl and nothing came up.

Thanks

I had a similar problem with my XT hubs so I sold them.

One side kept coming loose but I didn't have any spare parts left over after stripping cleaning re greasing them but thought they could have done with a lock nut....

They were either too tight or came loose.

Pain in the but IMO and I'm not afraid of stripping things down rebuilding them etc but Shimano hubs, no way....

Someone will be along soon to tell us we've been doing it all wrong though and we're complete numpties.

tighten up the cones and the nuts and then back the cones out half a turn into the nut. Makes things nice and tight so they wont loosen off over time...

If they're the older type XT, then the drive side cone/locknut is partially hidden inside the freehub body, and you need to back off the cone at the other end and pull the axle through(cue the sound of ball bearings falling to the floor, 9 of 1/4" per side if needed) so you can get the spanners on them. Because this is more hassle, Sod's law states that it's going to be the drive side that's the loose one.
