Does anyone know what freehubs fit the older deore hubs (with the slot-in-a-barrel appearance for fitting normal spokes in a tangential non-holey manner)? My descriptive abilities have failed me and I'm not able to find a photo.

Same ones as for mormal Deore as far as I can remember, may be worth getting a non disc hub (M530)so you have new bearings/axle too, and a skewer to sell on to recoup the cost.

Ooh, I've actually done this.

I had an issue with slightly differently spaced cones on the replacement freehub. I took that from a conventional Deore hub. Now, how did I do it...

Trying to think, here.

I think you'll need to add a washer to the drive side of the hub's axle. Otherwise, the axle won't protrude enough from the freehub body, and when you bung the cassette and lockring back on, the lockring will be right up against the dropout, and the wheel won't turn. This was because the depth of the bearing surface was slightly deeper on the replacement freehub, meaning the cones go into the freehub more. And the axle then sticks out of the other side, too much.

Now this could just be down to a later design of Deore freehub, but I think you may have to play around with axle washers to get it to work. I think I had to use a 3mm washer, or thereabouts.

Have fun, and I hope this helps.

If you stick with deore type hubs, then you usually just need to swap the spacers/seal from the brake side, old for new.(LX hubs, for instance, have a slightly longer freehub internally that does need lots of faffing with spacers).

That is an FH-M555 hub and it ran the same freehub body as an LX FH-M570. Part number is 3BD 9801. This body is also found on FH-M756 XT six bolt disc hubs if you are going to go down the buying a hub for spares route.
