Anyone know if these are any good. Do they take the same pads as the slx version?

I've got M595 calipers mated to old LX levers. As far as I can tell they're the same as the 596s (unless anyone knows differently). I wonder whether they just upped the number to match the new 2012 596 levers.

My 595s are great and in a big disc brake grouptest in WTB earlier in the year they outscored a lot of their more expensive equivalents. That said, those were the 2011 brakes and I think that the newer 2012 ones have caught up.

My M595s (and I assume) the M596s (although again I could be wrong) take the older style pads that were standard pretty much across the range. I think that the new 2012 SLX/XT/XTR take a new design with heatsinks.

For the money I reckon they'd be a great buy but folk do seem to be getting great deals buying from Europe so you might get a better brake for the same money if you look further afield.

I have 596 pads on my singlespeed, they replaced a set of 595s. The calliper is the same but the lever is revised plus they use the narrow diameter high power hose like new XT and SLX. This does make them feel more powerful than the 595. Pad wise they use the previous generation XTR / XT / SLX / 595 pad, the one with the pin at one end and a hook at the other.

If the hose diameter has changed, can I fit the new M596 levers to my M595 calipers or would they be incompatible with the existing hose?

You could use the older hose with the new levers as it is only the internal diameter that has changed. Externally they are the same and use the exact same olive.

That's great, thanks. I take it that even with a narrower internal diameter I still use the standard insert?

-- Edit -- Sorry, I'm being silly, I'd still be using the old hose!

You are correct, it is a gold coloured insert for the old hose and a silver coloured one for the newer narrow diameter one.

Thanks, I didn't realise that. I guess that when I comes time to change the hose I'll go for the newer narrower diameter kit but it's good to know that for now I can just add the levers.
