Is it normal with these brakes to have long lever travel before anything happens? Not too bothered at the mo that they aren't overly powerful as the pads have not yet bedded in but there is around 20mm of lever travel before anything happens, pumping the brakes makes no difference so doesn't feel like air in the system and both front and back do the same.

Hi

Got some on my winter bike and fair bit of lever travel on them to.
Worth bleeding them i reckon. quick and easy.

Found it to be normal, but not correct, give them a good bleed and you should end up with a very firm lever with very little free stroke.Expect to spend a fair bit of time as they seem to hold on to the last bits of air fairly tightly.

Do you need the funnel or is there a way round it?

I got these for Christmas, and took them to my lbs to re-bleed. They tried 3 times, but it always went back to sponginess or worse. lbs said must be broken and sent them off to Shimano, hopefully get them back tomorrow.

...but yours are probably fine

Funnel is a good idea(make sure you remove the seal with the bleed screw, you may not notice it and end up with two on the funnel and none on the brake)as it'll allow you to remove the lever from the bar and tilt it at all sort of angles to help dislodge those stubborn bubbles.

I fill them with a syringe from the caliper up over, quick, and gets rid of all the air

hey,i had these on my genesis core20 but the front started going very spongey and would travel down to the grip but it eventually gave up the ghost but the rear was great at stopping,had front bled 3 times but eventually bought new ones(slx's) and theyre awesome,still when they worked e 575's were very capable breaks..
