[#7545542]

Started building up MCJnrs Inbred, and the parts bins has revealed a pair of unused 160mm disc rotors - no idea how or why but they fit the wheels I have spare, so they will do for him.

Just looking online and CRC have the above Deore brake sets - any appreciable/practical difference between them?

I've been running the 506 on the front for over a year now and they've been faultless. I've no experience with the other model though i'm afraid.

GF has the 615s on her bike, they're a year old and have been absolutely faultless.

The 615s look nicer.....

I think the 506 are a black 596 non servo wave lever with an old 447 Shimano caliper.

615 have servo wave and new calipers

The 506 is a non-series version of the same lever as the 615 I believe. The caliper is the older deore one. Whether that bothers you? To be honest the performance is likely identical for 99% of riding, so go with the one you like the look of 🙂

447 caliper on the 506 brake is Acera/Alivio level, and is designed for Resin pads only. Also won't take the IceTech finned pads. 615 will take sintered pads and IceTech finned options.

Unless there's a significant saving, I'd go 615.

What disc rotors have you found?

AFAIK: The older Deore calipers (that take the B01 pads) are designed to use a wider track on the disc than the newer ones (that take the G02 pads, I think).

This table from a 2008 document (maybe someone can find a newer version) shows which disc rotors are narrow or wide

Here are the two types:

If you use the old calipers with the newer discs the pads will overhang the spokes on the disc rotor. (If you pack the caliper out to avoid this, then the pads miss the disc completely at the outer edge.)

I don't think there is any problem using the newer calipers with the older discs, but I am not an expert.

^ that would be more than enough reason to go 615.

Gone for 615s with the old discs - if it works I've saved £30 on discs....

Thanks everyone
