What method do you use for degreasing?
Recently I've been using a generic automotive brake cleaning fluid, but have been considering cracking out some oven cleaner. I figure as long as it's washed off quickish it won't have time to react with any aluminium.
I object to the 8 quid a can that shops try to sell 'bike' degreaser at.
Any home tips?
Gunk it is pretty powerfull stuff i tend to take the parts off the bike that need it,Dunk them in the stuff and the wash off
Petrol is the poor mans degreaser.
I have access to our chemical store at work :

Natural plant hydrocarbon solvent = strips all grease, smells a bit and is irritant but does not strip paint or eat seals 🙂
DEB Jizer on the drive. Washing up liquid on everything else.

I was thinking of using MEK as it's cheap to buy from hardware stores.
I would use petrol, but I don't have any to hand, which is odd I know, but own no lawn cutting equipment or petrol driven and DERV doesn't do it.
A litre of GUNK is 5.49 at Halfords, 3 for 2 as well. I could have three litres of it and it would last a lifetime
I wonder weather MEK might dissolve paint? Be carefull 😯

I was thinking of off the bike for using that on chains etc.
Have to wear gloves and use it outside (or really wear a respirator) so as to not inhale those lovely ketones.
Having seen the price of GUNK I will most likely just use that now, rather than generic brake cleaner, but I do love the smell of it.
BTW I use Squirt wax dry lube in dry and wet - I haven't needed degreaser for ages 🙂
I use the Halfords Citrus degreaser...works very well, evaporates away and can be normally got on a 3-for-2 offer

🙄
petrol is for throwing and sniffing only

Why I got more interested in the degreasing process after getting a sample.

So you did or didn't like Squirt Quirrel ❓

Not sure yet.
I appreciate the concept behind it, yet the 'not buying degreaser' thing isn't that much of a strong point for me, but previous experience of wax lubes is positive.
I used to use a spray on wax lube (blue in colour) on my (motor)bikes in Thailand. It worked well there and lasted. Can't remember the brand just now, but that was in fairly humid and wet conditions. I admitedly only ever went off-road on those bikes by accident, but I did live in a fairly dusty dirty town that was messy in wet season. I didn't have to reapply it every ride.
Not sure why squirt is needed to be reapplied in wet conditions every time, but willing to give it a go.
I would quite happily do the dunk in grease trick for the chain if I had the time and patience.
Cheapest, and it seems to be fairly harmless, but very effective is Elbow Grease for £1 at Semi Chem. Also works on clothes. Diesel does a good job on chains but leaves a residue which may not suit squirt.
Jizer + 1
First wet ride with squirt lube yesterday. Not overly impressed. Two bikes out. One with a spotless drive which has three layers of squirt on (the last of which was applied the night beore). The other bike has been running squirt for a few weeks. If the chain looks mucky, it was wiped down and then squirt re-applied. That got just as mucky and messed up as with any other lube (normally user Pedros ATB in winter and Pedros Road Rage in the summer).
I'll keep using it in the summer I think but it's not the holy grail that some people claim.
