my prevail must be getting on for 4 years old. sales have got me thinking about a replacement. any recommendations and great deals out there? is mips worth the extra?

I have a Giro Synthe MIPS and it's the best road helmet I've ever had. All depends on the fit though...

Luckily my kask mojito fits really well, good thing really as I only bought it to match my best kit... 😳
Couple of suggestions based on personal experience:
- Mavic Cosmic Ultimate; comfortable and light. JE James have white in medium only; rrp £165, now £49!
- Brooks Harrier; I have a 'limited edition' one - same design and finish as standard version other than visible numbered insert. My go-to helmet. £125 for standard model.
As ^^^ fit is all-important.
Mojito is a great all round road helmet, light, vented, amazingly comfortable especially if fitted properly with the up'n'down system fitting below your occipital bones (lumpy bits on the back of your head). Many riders wear them off road as well, especially if you're not bothered about the peak.
In general Kask helmets are really comfy due to the fitting system, plus they change the size of the shell depending on the size of the helmet, not all manufacturers do that. The more aero ones have a different fit system, the cheaper Rapido has a simplified version of the up'n'down.
However, as everyone else suggests, it's what fits that's best as you're more likely to wear it. Cycle Show is on at the NEC at the end of September, there'll be loads of brands to try and buy there if you can make it.

Try some on, find one that fits, buy it in a colour you like.
you guys must have weird heads. I have never had a helmet not fit....possibly blessed by being Mr average...not tried kask probably give them a go

Catlike have been great for me for many years now - well vented, comfortable and they look great.
Just bought a POC Octal for a change, as came off bike in June and bashed my helmet and fancied a change.
The POC is very, very light - and VERY comfortable. But, the straps at the front stick out quite a lot relative to other helmets, so not all my glasses actually work with it. Common issue apparently with POC.
