Got a minion ss on at the moment, but last muddy ride out in Wharncliffe it was all over the place.

Recommendations please for a good overall winter tyre that will handle the Mud, but also the Rocky trails of the peak.

Will fit to both my bikes so need it in 27.5 and 29 flavour

Minion DHR2.  Summer, winter, spring, mud, sand, rock.

On my FS and my HT. 🙂

Edit: Front and back.

Minion DHR2

Handles Scottish winter mud just as well as it handles Scottish summer mud. Yet to find anything that rolls as well and grips as well.

DHR2. Works great in all but the worst mud and even then it’s ok. I keep it on my full-sus all year whilst the hardtail gets a Minion SS in the drier months (and sometimes a Shorty for absolute filth).

I prefer the dual compound to the 3C - it rolls a bit faster, lasts quite a lot longer and bites harder in the dirt even if it isn’t quite as sticky on wet roots or rocks. The 2.4 is quite a bit knobblier than the 2.3 so better in looser conditions but rolls a bit slower - I prefer the bigger one on steep or rough terrain.

Anyone using the doubledown DHR2 and does it come in 2.4in / dual compound version?

Really impressed with the Exo 2.3 but it's a bit fragile for rocky terrain.

DHR2 3C on the rear, swapped over at the start of the year, brakes way better than a DHF.

I've just fitted a 2.4wt DHR2 to the rear, after running a 2.4wt Aggressor. Definitely more traction and grip climbing over the Aggressor, I've also noticed better rear braking grip and control too.

Can't say I've noticed an difference in rolling speed though, but hoping it lasts as least as long as the Aggressor did (5 months of 4x a week riding all over Wales, The Lakes and Peak District)

I'll fit another Aggressor when things dry out again sometime in 2019

+1 for the DHR2

@cha****ng - have never been able to find a 2.4 DD DHR2 , in 3C or in Dual. Wanted one for my DH wheelset, had to settle for a 2.3 (which I tore)  now using a 2.6 DD Aggressor

I run dhr2 for the wetter months and aggressor in the summer. Going from dhr2 to aggressor I can’t say I noticed much rolling resistance difference, but going back to dhr2 around a month ago it definitely feels draggier. But, that’s in 3c (dual compound might be less draggy and I’ll probably try a 2.4 exo dusk compound version next) and the braking grip is much better in the wet and on steep natural muddy terrain.

So for wet stuff the dhr2 would be my recommendation on the back.

Schwalbe Magic Mary Super Gravity in soft, put one on last winter and loved it, found grip for days and excellent braking in all conditions!

@Chakaping the DHR DD dual compound doesn't exist sadly it would be a great rear tyre

I'm using the 2.4 DD 3c now on the back of my full sus and it rolls slower than the hr2 I had on before it

the knobs are very meaty compared to a hr2 2.3 I have one new and I compared it to the dhr when I mounted it up

My Bird Zero came with a Maxxis Ardent 2.4 EXO TR on the back which I am pretty impressed with so far. Has a 2.3 Minion DHR on the front and it seems to all cope well with slippery roots and slop. The Ardent is pretty big, almost Plus !

Another vote for a DHR2, great rear tyre. I rekon the Exo+ (don't think I've made that up) when it's available will be the perfect crap conditions rear tyre.

just to continue the DHR2 lovefest........ DHR2 year round in dual compound (3C is noticeably draggy on the back). good alrounder and works as well in wharncliffe as it does on rocky peak descents

Erm, are we talking about Lance Armstrong? The most-vilified individual in road cycling?

15 years ago we would have agreed the answer was Conti Vert Pro.

DHR2 is today's Vert Pro or possibly Nevegal.

Naaa, the daddy of "actual 2.4" tyres you could just about tolerate on an XC bike.

Nevegals were always hit and miss whether you got a good one, or the horrible OEM ones that were worse than useless.

Interested in this; have a DHR2 WT 2.4 (f) and Ardent 2.4 (r) on 26 in wheeled hardtail. DHR worked great in the Alps, on my not very wide rims.

Was considering shorty (f) and specialised storm control (r) for the depths of muddy winter.

My full suss just has Conti Rubber Queens f & r. I have also got a 2.4 HR2 kicking about. Probably should stop buying tires and use them...

I've but a worn DHR2 on the back now it's wetter again, can definitely tell it's not as grippy as last winter when it was new. Would like to try a WT version.

how does a aggressor 2.4 WT stack up against a 2.3  DHR 2?
