Took my boys to the skate park on Sunday - they loved it and I can see us going loads (Midsomer Norton - amazing place). I'd like them to have decent knee pads but the ones I've seen for kids are toys and would be no good.

Any recommendations? (They are 3 and 5) Less expensive is better!

Having taken my 4 y.o. round Glentress on Saturday, I'm also interested in an answer!

I could only ever find cheap rubbish for my kids when they were that age, I did get a couple of half decent pads Elbow/Knees/Wrists from Lidl, the knees were too big, so they used the elbows on their knees.

Your best bet is to look at BMX kit. Shot & Fox both make pads for smaller kids. My son had the Shot pads when he was 5, and they were a better fit than the Fox ones. They're light, cheap and not very bulky.

Fox make really nice kids gloves as well.

You can also get kids size chest and back protectors. 661 used to make them.

With kids you really do need to try them as the sizing is very personal depending on how big your kid is.

Full face helmets at that age are hard to come by. My son ended up with a MX helmet (for BMX racing) as that was the best fit.

thanks, will have a look at the Shot & Fox stuff. The 3 year old is alot slower (at the moment) and will be ok with just jeans and a hoody - the 5 year old will be going for it and so I'd like him to have something more than cotton as protection!

ps: what anti-anxiety drugs for parents watching at the skatepark? 😉

I'm taking my two to the skate park later. If I find out about any treatments I'll let you know 🙂 Closing your eyes doesn't help, and having mopped up other kids broken noses in the past you just wonder "when" rather than "if". Just keep telling yourself they're learning to balance risk & reward.

Sorry I didn't read the post properly first time around and answered more for biking. For the skatepark they have a mix of the lidl / aldi wrist guards and some pads we bought online somewhere. They are pretty good (hardish plastic outer) with lots of padding and they weren't expensive. We probably got them from Amazon!

My son uses race face junior pads for elbows (these are really nice, better than 661 and fox). Also you could look for adult elbow pads to put on the kids knees, that works well. Maybe go for used? My 8 year old will take large adult elbow pads on his knees, maybe look for small ones for your kids?

Also the ONLY good wrist guards I have found for kids are the Dakine ones in size XS, these are not cheap but really good. My son uses these for snowboarding.

thanks - I'll get the 5 year old to a bike shop and entice him with some cool stuff.

I got a set of TSG kids guards for my lad, just fit him but he's a waif of a boy for an 8 year old. £40 for a set of elbow and knee/shin combo set.

Good call on the adult elbow/forearm pads - mine fit my five year old's knee/shin extremely well. And as I rarely use them, that's another few quid saved.
