We're looking to replace a 12 year old's 24" wheel Halfords Carrera lump with something a little more refined and with 26" wheels.

Any suggestions ?

Perhaps browse the sales for something of suitable size.
My son - 11 - is on a 15" Rocklobster frame, swapped bits over from 13" that my 9 yo daughter now rides with 24" wheels. If you can get a frame reasonably cheap and have bits lying around then its ok to build, but easy to break the bank if you are not careful. The benefit is that you can end up with something that is really good, light etc.

My sons are on:

XS Giant Trance

S Specialized Stumpjumper FSR

But you didn't mention budget or where they are going to be riding

@DaveP - good point. Budget would be sub-£500 as he's not yet been fully bitten by the bug. In all honesty, we are talking towpath trundling and some sub-gnar core forest paths.

I want something serviceable with decent parts that will grow with him for a bit.
