I've bled loads of Hopes successfully before but can't get these to go. Have followed all the normal procedures (with reach and BPC on max), plus the final extra step with the reservoir held vertical. Try as I do I cant get a decent bleed, the lever comes almost to the bar before I get a bite, and even then it's quite squishy. They're worse then when I started, and that wasn't great.
Any ideas chaps?
Thx.
Sounds to me like you've issues...
But what I do on mine:
Wheels out
BPC unwound so the lever would be very squishy
Reservoir level with the ground
Max 3 cycles each time Res is topped up (sometimes 2 cycles)
Seal everything up
Wheel in
BPC wound in
I had hopes that I couldn't get bled, sent them back to hope, who put new cylinder seals other lever
Thx both, yeah I suspect seals on the lever. I've only tried the rear so far, will have a go at the front and see if it's the same.
try to make sure you've got no high spots/humps in the hose, they can act as air pockets that can be difficult to shift.
@conan how many reservoir fluid topups to flush through a rear brake, roughly?
There's a blanking plug in the lever. I use this for the final push. Once I've finished the bleed, I removed the blanking plug and then push the pistons back. With this opening at the highest point, the excess fluid will take any remaining air with it.
Gives a very firm bleed.
Dont, just do this
Thx. Did that.
But good to know it works because its a lot easier than the lever and spanner faff.
Good to hear that it worked, I spent hours doing the
1/4 turn open
pump lever
1/4 turn close
repeat
check reservoir, sh1t its empty
start again
repeat.
Only to find when I finished a brake significantly worse than before I started and a floor/bike/shoes full of fluid
It didn't work, what I meant was good to know its a valid technique. New seals needed I think. But it's going to be the way forwards.
IIRC there was an issue with master cylinders seal. May be worth checking, sending back to Hope.

TBF that's the worst way to bleed a brake. Hope have some alignment-of-the-moons stuff they recommend too but bottom-up bleeding works best for almost any hydraulic system that doesn't have some special requirement (closed one-way valves etc). Syringe and push. Air wants to rise.
Keep up Northwind your 2 days and a post behind ๐

Bled my X2's last night using the technique from youtube. No problems. A thing to check is when you reseat the pistons you may need to replace the pads too as if they are both pushed out and squishy they wear extra quick. I still had about @30% left but the pistons had retracted too far to allow what was remaining on the pads bite and the lever would just go all the way through it's travel. Something else to try before replacing seals which is quite a faf.
