Hello there,
I'll shortly be delivering some "Re-introduction to cycling" type workshops/introductory rides to staff from businesses in the Dearne Valley. One of the things I would like to be able to do is recomend good bike shops.
So, shops that will offer useful advice to new/inexperienced cyclists, and maybe with a commuter slant.
What recomendations do you all have?
As always any adice or comments very much appreciated. Cheers.
Alex
Lexs at Penistone.. bit away but a good LBS... then James's at Rotherham isnt to far down the main road from Wath.
Bike Shed in Scissett? At the very top of the Dearne Valley.
Racescene in Barnsley for the roadies!
Isn't there one in Wombwell?
Halfords Cortonwood by Morrison's on the Dearne Valley Parkway! Up the TPT Elsecar leg.
simonm speaks the truth
tptcruiser I take it you are joking right?
The one in Wombwell was/is called Allen's cycles - they used to be a very good roadie shop in the eighties, and were one of the 1st shops in t' country to get mountain bikes. However, last time I was there it was kiddies and shopper bikes galore, with nothing of interest to me.
Depends which part of the Dearne valley.
If its towards Wath / Swinton / Mexborough then I would say James is the nearest and best in that area.
There still is a shop in Wombwell (which used to be Allens) but not sure what its called or what its like now.
I think Allens used to be the same people as the One Day Sales crowd. They have a shop at Worsborough, Barnsley which is handy for cheap bits, esp Shimano and tyres/tubes etc. No workshop on site though. If you come over as far as Doncaster, then there's another Halfords, with a couple of good guys in there at the moment. Then you've got Don Valley Cycles which is heavily roadie biased but stocks some good kids and commuter stuff, good workshop but long turnaround times sometimes. Extreme sports is MTB biased, with BMX and snowboard gear as well. Has a workshop and experienced folk running it. Most of these places are too high end for folks looking to keep a £100 supermarket special running, when they hear you should be spending over a tenner on any bike part it's a shock. There's a stall on Doncaster market and a tiny little shop on St. Sepulchre Gate West called Pedal Power which caters better to that price range. If I was advising anyone in this area where best value was, though, I'd send them over to Decathlon in Sheffield.
One in Wombwell is now called Geared Up
