I have a 08 Madone 6.9 pro but am looking to change the Dura Ace 7800 crank to either a SRAM Red or Campag SR. The question I have is around the BB, if I change cranks do I need to also buy a different sized BB or is there some kind of standard fit here ๐
Cheers muchness,
Jeff
They're just a couple of bearings pressed into the frame in a BB90, Trek do SRAM ones (which are probably the same as the Shimano ones), and I think they do Campag ones too.
Why change though? Red chainsets are horrible, and you can't mix/match Campag/Shimano, it's just silly.
Was actually thinking of changing out the whole 7800 groupset for Red or Campag, why? Because I'm a Campag roady at heart and the bike was a great deal I couldn't say no to and as complete came with 7800. Only liked the look of the Red and not heard any bad stories about it, so might make me think again if the crank is not up to the job.
They're not not up to the job, just not as good as DA.
The cassette's also incredibly noisy and the return spring on the brakes is weak so they feel a bit spongey. Overpriced IMO, but you may get on with it. The shifters feel more like Campag than Shimano.
Fair enough, so what about the new 11spd Campag Super Record, heard any stories about it? I haven't tried it personally but it would be good to hear anything before I buy it ๐
The new Ergolevers look like they were designed by a three year old, and like every other Campag groupset it feels like it was designed by a three year old. Not really a Campag fan me!

Maybe its just the 7800 levers that I'm not liking, read somewhere the 7900 are meant to be better?
They're different certainly, more Campag-like I'd say, flatter on top, with more of a 'hook' at the front.
but the 7800 brakes don't work well with the 7900 levers (or vice versa) apparently.
Aye tis true, different cable pulls allegedly. Same with the mechs, all designed to work together, rather than mixing and matching between groupsets, let alone manufacturers!
Bloody Shimano. Early Red chainsets had problems (outer rings made of edam), but they've fixed them so they're great now. Apparently SR is a bitch to set up (and as with 7900 you must use the whole groupset, no mixing-and-matching). Normally I'd say go for Force or Chorus, but on a 6.9 it'll look silly (gotta have the best ๐ ). So Red it is.
