[#2871040]

Just tried removing the cassette from my road bike & failed.

Its been on for 2.5 years or so so that might be the problem.

I removed the QR, lock ring & outer two rings just like an MTB cassette, but then the there was a round space thing about 1cm long and the rest of the cassette came off with the inner spline all away from the wheel.

Is it rust welded together or is there some trick I am missing ?

Thank you to the kind mechanic at merlin who fixed this for free.

The technique for future reference is two chain whips one in either direction, one on the smallest stuck gear - give them a jiggle and hey presto. repeat for next stuck gear.

The cause - a lightwieght free hub body. - the cogs have pressed in to it and left little indentations - cauising cassette gears to get stuck.
grease would not help.

Probably a new freehub next time - another 3 years hopefully.

I had this problem last night, freehub splines just can't take the torque of the little gears and tend to eat into them
I had to use a chainwhip, a hammer and a screwdriver to get mine off - gave the freehub a quick file down but expect I'll be buying a steel freehub next
