[#4634249]

Apologies but I am in the market for a Carbon Road bike and am really struggling to get my head around the sizing. I've got a 55cm Boardman cycle cross and at 5'10" I think it fits me quite nicely.

Having paid Ribble a visit today I sat on a 52cm Carbon Sportive and was told by the salesman that was the calculated right size.It seemed Ok but small. I also sat on a 48cm evolution and he said this was the calculated right size.

I'm totally confused!! I've compared the geometry of the 55cm Ribble to the 55cm Boardman and I recon they seem to match in both cases (but I should be looking at a 52cm according to the shop and sizng guide). The main difference between the Ribbles is the top tube length that I could compensate for by fitting a shorter stem.

So my problem is should I buy the one that matches the Boardman that I seem happy with (with a shorter stem) or buy the one the salesman says is right for me?

I've also taken a Bianchi 55cm out for a spin and this seemed small. I've tried a Scott CR1 56cm and this did feel a bit big, so am I going to end up with the wrong size bike?

Your thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.

I'm 5'7 and have a 54 Planet-X, waiting for my 54 Dolan CX to arrive.. I used to have a 49 Jake and that was too small. Thought about getting a proper fit done?

Ribble sizing is different; take 4cm off your expected frame size - 56cm becomes 52cm.

Dunno, at least post a link to the geometry of the frames, then someone might be able to help you further.

Can you get a fit generically?

What I mean is if I go for a fit won't I be tailored towards the particular brands that shop is selling?

I was measured today at Ribble and he said 52cm which has surprised me.

My Tcr is a 55.5,my kenesis is a 60 and my raleigh as a 65!
They all fit me (10mm stem length difference but more to with usage than fit).
Seat tube length is poor indicator of actual size.

(Tcr is compact, kenesis is horizontal and raleigh is 20 years old).

Is it? My 56cm Ribble is the same size as my 56cm DeRosa... ๐Ÿ˜•

Hmmm there's a Ribble frame that's the same as a De Rosa!

How tall are you?

Hmm well maybe it's they're too big?! I dunno but lots of discussions about Ribble sizing e.g. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1127925

the important number to compare is the effective top tube - the length that a horizonal top tube would be from the head tube to seat post collar

then get the fit right by replicating the distance that the saddle nosetip is back from the crank centre vertical line

Ribble will sell you anything

Get over to Paul Hewitt cycles and see Paul himself, he'll put you on the jig and find the correct size for you, he'll even work you out a good deal
