[Closed] Damn. Screwed up. Swingarm bearings stuck.

Well, half of them anyway. Pressing the bearings out of the swingarm has resulted in the bearings exploding and leaving the outer race in the frame. Very little purchase to tap the outer race out by itself as the swingarm itself is the bearing carrier.

(the nature of the way the bearings are installed means you can only press them out on the inner race)

Need helpful suggestions. Or to the shop with tail between legs it is. 🙁

if all else fails carefully grind away at the outer race until it releases.

if the frame is aluminium then you could try a hair drier to heat the area gently as it will expand more than the steel bearing. Don't let it get too hot though.

It's a two person job but if you hold a flat head screwdriver in the recess of the bearing and against the frame, then hit the screwdriver from the other side. Do opposite sides alternatively and that should slowly walk out the bearing race, if that make sense?

Yeah, worked out it's a 2 person job to try that. Worried about damaging the cup as there isn't much to get purchase on.

*sigh*

andyl - what would you suggest grinding with? Don't have a dremel.

Had this recently with my Enduro. In the end I used a blind bearing puller to grip what was left of the outer race then used a drift to knock it out. Took a fair bit of time and more effort than I expected but once it started to move it came out quite easily.

Puller was about £25 off eBay

You can sometimes use a 'rawlbolt' type expanding wall anchor as a puller if you don't have the time/money to get proper puller. Find one where the expanding section just fits through the outer race, tighten the bolt to expand it, then tap it out as as windydave31 says.

I just have a cheap copy of a dremel. The Aldi ones are good.

A puller would be my first choice as grinding is a last resort.
