[#6481956]

After standing there on Ditchling Beacon yesterday, watching all these nice, shiny bikes ride past, I've got a hankering for a new road bike (actually, I've been thinking about it for a while).

I have a Kuota Kharma that I actually quite like, but that new bike itch is getting stronger.

I've been looking at the BMC Team Machines: Does anyone have any experience of these? I am also open to suggestions around the £2500-3000 mark. Ideally it would either have Di2 or be Di2 compatible.

Or perhaps I should hold out until discs become more commonplace.

Can you build a bike.? Merlin are doing Ultegra Di2 11 speed for £600, add some wheels and hang it off the frame of your choice. For less than 2k you can build a seriously quick machine that nobody else will have.

2015 sees the coming of disks. If I had the money and wanted disks I would buy a something cheap for this winter and splash the cash next spring. If you have ridden said winter hack through the winter then you may the legs to justify a 3k carbon race weapon.

True, something to think about. I may hold off until next year and wait for discs.

The new bike itch is strong with this one though, lol.

Like I say the roads are about to turn to shite in the next few weeks. Might as well wear a few quids worth of Sora out than a grands worth of Di2.

I imagine I'll break out my cross bike for day-to-day riding duties during the winter and save my nice bike for weekends.

Not di2 but about the best bike I can think of for the money.

Canyon ultimate al slx. Di2, mavic wheels, 16.1lbs, £1749

I just bought one and it's very nice and I couldn't have built one for less.

Can't see £600 Di2 - is it an upgrade kit (no cranks)? They were selling off 10 speed Di2 sets for £500 recently. The 11 speed RD is much nicer looking (think Dura Ace), but I am thoroughly 10 speed at the moment.

So, do you reckon next year will be when disc brakes become commonplace?

Well there is nothing more mainstream than a Giant Defy, and next year all their carbon Defy's are going disk. Personally, I don't feel the need unless you want to run silly-light carbon tubular wheels. But the UCI say no, so it will be a few years.

If the Defy was disk last year, i'd have bought a TCR instead. I race and we have four road bikes to swap wheels. If you don't, then there really isn't much to choose.
