After 8 months of fairly regular riding the original chain on my 09 rockhopper has broken 2x in 2 rides. So I think its time for a replacement.
Will any 9 speed chain work on the hg50 cassette?

yes, however, your cassette may be worn as well (and possibly the chainrings, most likely the middle)

New chain = new cassete, or you will have further problems. Buy a SRAM chain so you can split it for cleaning.

The cassette doesnt look worn, I think its just that the original chain was carp!

even so you should replace cassette and chain - chains and cassettes wear together espcially the smaller sprockets - you may find if you just do the chain that it slips on the smaller sprockets.

Chain Reaction have some good deals on cassettes and chains at the mo - HG61 cassette for £19 reduce from £44 and a HG71 chain for £12

though best get a sram chain as as above the gold powerlink link makes take off and clean a doddle Sram PC971 = £17.99
