Read MBUK trail review, which seemed to think its got new surfaces, is this true, is it any good? Has it ruined anything?

Well, I only ever do short sections of it as part of bigger rides, but it certainly wasn't true of the bits I've done recently. The most recent being the final descent about 2 weeks ago...

ETA: It's Cwmcarn, BTW. ๐Ÿ˜‰

been riding it over the last year, no changes except removal of freeride wood stuff and some washing out of the trail when the big rains came recently.

Not been for a while but months ago they improved the last part of the downhill (on the XC course), don't think they did anything since. Was a bit of an odd article in MBUK, not much has changed and what did change was done months ago.
