[#1669560]

I'm considering upgrading the wheels on my CX bike, the current ones are strong but heavy, and was interested in the STW view on what's good.

I'm not a big bloke - weigh around 11.5 stones – so don’t need anything too industrial.

I've just got a tax refund 🙂 so my budget is around £500.

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

Mike

£500?

Cartridge hubs of some sort, Reflex rims and either DT or Sapim db spokes.
Spend the rest on some Dugast or FMB tubs.

I used to use Bontrager Race X Lites, they were impressively tough!

The Bontys will pull the spoke through the rim in the end, they all do.

Are you racing them or just riding?

Racing - as LS, reflex, cartridge bearing hub and some nice tubs
Riding - Hope Pro3? £300, Open Pro rims, sorted.

I used Ksyrium SL's for years to race on and they were bombproof. never once changed a bearing or snapped a spoke. great wheels.

I assumed just for racing - I'd 2nd Open Pro on Hope for all-round use.
Agreed about Ksyriums as well, although I have had to change a few bearings. Mind you they're the 2003 models 😀

Specific wheels ? 8OI usually take the current used wheels on my road bike and downgrade them to the cross bike currently ksyrium elites.
If I was going to spend £500on some specific cross wheels I would give Derek at wheelsmith.co.uk a ring and he will build you a superb set of wheels.
