I was looking at the trail used for the Southampton Cyclocross race and it doesn't say how long the trail is.
Are there fixed rules?

Yes. Courses must be between min and max length as set down by UCI regs. On the BC website.

Between 2.5 and 3.5 km with 90% rideable - apparently.
