[Closed] Cyclocross rims, are open pro's still the best?

Always used them and they were fab. Anything new come along that trumps them now?

They're still good for a clincher, but quite a few are moving to Alpha 340's to get the weight down.
Or do it properly & fit tubs.

Tubs are the way forward, but I do have a set of clinchers that use in the early season.

they are open pro's

Are 340s tough enough, not for the general wear and tear of cross. More the kerbs and exiting sand pits that sort of thing.

They seem pretty strong, much more so than I would have thought for the weight. I ran them on mine for two races last season on American classic hubs, DT Rev spokes & didn't have any problems just wanted to test them! I know quite a few guys are running them now as race wheels without any problems, just be careful fitting your tyres.
Wouldn't go for a really low spoke count though for cross, as they're not the stiffest rim out there.

I'd have a look at Velocity A23s as well. Same weight as Open Pro but wider.

I've been using DT R1.1, single eyelet, 32h, for my non-race wheels (old Paris Roubaix tub wheels for races :-).

They take a hell of a battering despite being very light. I do regular rides (most weeks) of about 3 hours, mix of road, bridelways and proper off-road with rim brakes, and they last fine, and I've used them in the 3 peaks too. It's sidewall wear that gets them.

I used to run CXP33, but they got dented to hell in one 3 peaks.

Last time round I bought ambrosio evolution rims, as they are a lot cheaper. They seem ok, but a bit heavier. Haven't dented them, but harder to build up in the first place. Probably down to using old spokes though rather than the rim.

+1 for Velocity A23.
JRA built me one up which I've been running tubeless (using a rip strip) and it's great because of the slightly wider profile.
