What's the deal with frame sizing for cyclocross bikes?

On a road bike with a horizontal top tube a 56cm frame seems to fit me ok (I'm 5'11"), but should I go for something slightly smaller on a cyclocross bike? ... would 54cm be more appropriate, or does it not work this way?

Cheers!

it's a reasonable guide. I'm 5'11" as well and ride a 56cm road frame and I think I have a 54" cross frame but I know I've been happy on a large cross frame too.

I ride the same size cross and road bikes. I'm no shorter on the cross bike than I am on the road so no need to size down, most decent designers allow for a a shorter top tube etc in the design.

I ride a 60 or 62cm road bike (59ish top tube) and a 60cm cx bike which has a top tube about 1cm shorter for the same size.

I reckon that the same size (from the same brand at least) would be the starting point but one size down may also be appropriate.

Always remember the love spuds on the top tube ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Go a size smaller for the stand over height and being able to jump on and off the bike.
