whats possible and how would I get there (compacts or doubles)?

I run a 36/46 on an Ultegra compact crank.

Thats for racing though - are you talking cross racing or cross riding?

Anything is possible if you buy the rings individually.

I'm a total advocate for single ring set-ups, however if you've no road bike,(like me), a 36/46 would be very nice as I often spin out my 42 ring on the road whilst training.
