Anyone with experience riding the CX1 groupset?
I am building up a new CX bike and am still deciding between the CX1 (1x11) and the Shimano 105/5800 (2x11). As the bike will be used for CX/road/gravel, 2x11 may offer a bit more utility. Any input is appreciated.
Thanks.
I've been riding CX1 since September. It hasn't been flawless, but it's been very good. Much better than anything else I've ever raced on.
I've had a couple different problems: to begin with I was dropping the chain quite regularly. I ended up shortening the chain by another two links, until it was very tight in the largest cog. That solved the problem, but it stopped me from changing out the front chainring, which is why I'd kept it longer in the first place.
The second problem was due to a bent derraileur hanger: definitely not the fault of CX1, but most other groupsets I've ridden can account for a little misalignment without being terrible at shifting. CX1 has to be completely and utterly straight if you want it to shift well. Bear that in mind when you think about how much you want to maintain your bike.
I love it for racing, but if I was building up a winter bike, or just a bike to ride in the hills on, I would avoid it. It's a truley 'race day' product that works exactly as intended.
I've been using it with good success but this is for racing. I have been able to train on the road with a 42 tooth chainring, no problems.
I would consider it a racing groupset though - for general off road adventures a smaller gear than 42x28 would be better.
Terrific input. Thanks.
I've been using it for 3 months. It's great, not dropped a chain yet. The only thing I'd comment on is that the jockey wheels seem to collect more grass than usual.
Thanks, Blazin. If I go with a Shimano build, I think it might look something like this. Decisions, decisions. Most of my CX racing will be just a few on the local level. Will also use the bike for some gravel races and general road training. During summer/fall, I'm doing all MTB.
