my dog comes to work with me everyday. Currently travel on the bus, but after an incident yesterday with a drunk and aggressive dog, im now looking to ride to work with him.
My ride would be approximately 1 mile on road, before the majority of the ride along plank gate in Wharncliffe (he can run off the lead), then through a park in deepcar to stocksbridge.
I've thought about one of those trailers for children but the sticking point is the access to Wharncliffe which is narrow, off camber and rooty, which I think would be too narrow.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can ride with my dog on the road sections, safely - anyone done anything similar. He's 17kg, so bit big to go in a basket!
How far each way is it?
More than about 8 miles and you'll break him by attrition. Before the heart problems Digby used to do 5 miles each way, 3 times a week. It was more than enough to leave him chilled for the whole week. (Asleep/quiet on his bed at work and at home when not eating or walking).
its 5.7 miles each way. He'd then get the whole day to rest at work before heading home.

Trailer to start of off road bit, lock trailer up there continue sans trailer?
Assumes the off road bit goes right to your work or you can walk the last bit with the dog on the lead pushing the bike.
I've seen cyclists using an fixed pole type thing jutting out from the frame with a shortish lead attached. Suppose it depends how good at remaining at heel he is, a 17kg do would presumably have you off in a second if he chased after something.
One wheel Bob type trailer with a box on it perhaps?

My lady friend has a backpack that she puts her dog in for these things, he's about half the weight of yours though.
She has a trailer too, but he doesn't really like that!
Not sure how good those sort of cargo bikes are at going off road though
could get a BOB trailer?
