I've only really go one pair of summer cycling socks. A pair of DeFeet ones, nice and airy and about 12 years old!
Really though, now I'm looking for a few more options for summer socks, do I really need to spend over £7 on a pair of socks?
Are they worth the extra, or are there cheap alternatives that'll do the trick?
After something thin to keep my feet cooler as I'm not comfortable riding off road without socks.

To be honest some of the best summer cycling socks i've had have been from Cannondale that I brought in the sale from ChainReaction.
I really like Oakley tech socks, best I've tried for breath-ability. They're also one of the cheaper ones.
Smartwool PHD are superb.
Merino is the future.
Field and Trek, now a cheapy place, some times have offers on. I buy Smartwool trainer type socks, just long enough to keep crap out of your shoes. £3.50 a pair. Lots of stretch so you can drop a size to get the price. Wonderful.
Endura ones in a three pack from Crc are
pretty good value
i've never considered a pair of socks specifically to cycle in. What makes them different to ordinary socks?
I just wear the old manky odd ones in the drawer to mtb in as they only get ruined with mud anyway
X-socks are nice
lidl cycling socks for me £2.99 a pair got some that are a good couple of years old still going strong
what are merino socks like in summer tho.... they must make yer feet abit hot ?
Sports world sell Karimore socks for running but there material and thick design make them perfect for a summer cycling sock £3 for 2 pairs and there really good quality.
I like the Karrimor and Lidl socks too, and I consider these disposable items. But the Sock Guy logo ones I've got as freebies from Maxxis and Sombrio over the years just kept on working, they're comfortable, wick well and still look great. So I buy Sock Guy for riding and use the others for kicking about in.
It's worth paying more for that kind of quality IMO.
I hate the Lidl ones I bought about a month ago - they just make feet hot & sweaty, might as well wear a bin bag on them!
I must be missing something. Unless it's properly cold and wet, and I mean well below zero with an array of wet stuff falling from the sky, what difference could socks possibly make?
I wear the same socks I wear all the time when I cycle. Cycle socks? The biggest rip off since disk cleaner.
If you're locking your foot into stiff SPD shoe it makes all the difference. Too thick, and you lose circulation. Too insulating and your feet can't breathe then you can get athlete's foot, dodgy seams can give you corns etc. until you get it, it seems like a small problem. But 10 miles from civilisation with massive pain it's a real buzz kill.
When I'm riding on flats it makes no difference at all because the shoe gives and breathes well, and I can alter my foot position.
Actually, I've given up on SPD's and always ride flat pedals these days, but I know why it's so important to get it right.
old socks from drawer or packs of running socks from decathlon.
I love cycling socks - where them all the time - even if I'm not on the bike. My current collection has 5 different types of Kona socks, 661s, Shimanos, Sunn and Diadora. And some very old Xsocks which have lasted very well and still comfy.
It makes no real difference at all unless you have particularly hot feet but they look better and that's reason enough for me but as above people will give all sorts of silly justifications... 🙂
For me, summer cycling socks should be slightly tougher than normal socks, but ideally give cooler feet.
for the last couple of years I've been using M&S merino dress socks, nice and thin, seem to regulate heat OK, but are quite fragile after getting bits of grit in your shoe and cycling 20 miles with it rubbing.
My old defeet ones are still in good condition.
Only other normal socks I have I tend to find a bit thick for warm summer days, so was looking for something thin and cool that doesn't disintegrate after the first ride. running socks may do the trick, wouldn't mind those short 'invisible' type ones, otherwise something just below the ankle..
cheers
The biggest rip off since disk cleaner
have you actually worn any decent cycling socks?
if you have then I suspect you are qualified to pass judgement.
Is it a requirement to wear cycling socks pulled right up? I have seen a lot of pros rocking this look, is it a function or fashion thing
TK Maxx -whatever they have in that comes just below the ankle for summer, above the ankle for winter.
In black, packs of 3.
My current summer ones are Calvin Klein doncha know. 😉
'Bout £6.99 for a pack of 3 (pairs, that is...) Peanuts....
+1.
How 'technical' can a bloody sock be.!?
I've got about a dozen pairs of the Aldi ones - the cycling & running ones are basically the same, bar the colour.
Great socks, cool, short and they have L & R sewn on them too for added comedy value (and because they have additional left/right specific panels sewn onto the underside for a smidge extra padding!).
The free Trek/Norco ones from M.B.U.K are great as well, as long as you don't have massive feet.
Ron Hill running socks or Sealskinz for winter.
decathlon bike socks are £3 for 2 pairs
I have quite a few pairs of Shimano short cut socks for riding in. They dry really quickly so no sweaty feet for me. Proper socks do make a difference IMHO.
Can't beat defeet IMO. 🙂
I got a load of these http://www.howies.co.uk/product.php/3127/0/ in large. not even the wife has noticed that I am wearing womens clothes... :-O
I've got two pairs of dale ones from crc which are comfy, some endura ones which are awesome in the heat for wicking away sweat and then I have some fox and wales sock guy ones which are really comfortable especially if you have to walk in spds
Only just started wearing cycling socks (endura 3 pack and aldi are reasonable) as last winter I got fed up of the remnants of a muddy ride still hanging round my work socks despite being through the washing machine
