[Closed] Cycling jackets - windproof, waterproof?

Hi,

I'm currently trying to get some decent cycling clothes. I've been looking at getting a decent jacket first. Firstly, am I correct in thinking that a windproof jacket if probably the way to go as:

- The waterproof jackets loose their waterproof coating eventually anyway
- The waterproof jackets are not very breathable.
- A windproof is good enough for light showers.

With this in mind, is a Gore Phantom II Windstopper a good choice? It looks like it has a nice fit (pity there is nowhere to try one on). Is it worth the £££?

Thanks,

T

I'd agree with the approach unless you go out in proper rain. I don't know the phantom but am a fan of windstopper style stuff generally. Have a great Altura one for the road and a puma running top for mtb. IMO 100% windstopper is too much, panels of STD fabric make you cook less.

The Gore Phantom is an awesome jacket...especially as I only paid 80 quid for mine last week 🙂
strikes a good balance between water proofness and breathability.

Gah, how'd you manage that?

Hmm, a running top might not be a bad idea - those I could try on.

Gore phantoms are brilliant jackets, and surprisingly waterproof.

Any difference between the 2006 and the 2010 Phantom II? (The 2006 is only £67 Vs £119 for the 2010)

My Phantom is excellent bar the fit which could be better around the stomach area... although it might just be designed for the more gutsome rider.

I'm not sure which year is what, but the original ones (Windstopper N2S) aren't waterproof-coated, have a slightly slimmer fit, and are different material - the newer ones (Windstopper Softshell) are more plush inside and out.

Whilst the newer ones are markedly better in the wet I find the old ones a little better in the dry, largely because I'm skinny and they fit me a little closer.

Edit:
After a quick search for the one you mention... looks like that is the old (N2S) one, though I thought the "Phantom Plus II" was Softshell...

Really good quality jackets are seriously breathable but I've found it doesn't really make any difference to me, anything along this lines will always be sweaty in anything other but serious cold. Goretex, event etc are amazing for what they do but frankly if you put on a long sleeve jersey made mostly of holes you get hot, so what hope for a jacket?

Gilets work well though, keep the arm "radiators" working but cool the body down.
