Hello All,

I'm off to Menorca in September and I'd like to do a bit of biking whilst there. I hear its quite good for cycling but google has not been my friend so far in finding maps/routes or bike shops from which to hire a decent bike. Has any one been biking out there/know where I can find some maps or a bike hire place?

Many thanks in advance.

J

I've never cycled there but I've been three times.
Personally, I would think it's not a very good place to ride to be honest. I've never felt the need when I've been there.

There's only one real hill on the whole island and only one real road. 😉 I expect there's a fair few dusty off road trails around the place but I've never seen anyone cycling on them.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Majorca? Now that's a place geared up for cycling.

Thanks for the comment Samuri but its definitely Menorca. Apparently there are two major scenic bridleways, one that runs through the middle and one that runs around the coast. However I've no idea where to get onto them or where to hire a bike from (I'll be based in Mahon).

I landed back from menorca today and I agree it didn't look upto much riding wise. However the Coastal routes are beautiful and could easily be ridden.

I rode from Cala'n'blanes to cuitudella daily and it was stunning.

Thinking about it, I do remember seeing a bike shop in Cuitudella.
I prefer Cuitudella to Mahon myself but they're both nice places.

Here you go.

Says they hire bikes, got a shop in both towns apparently. I bet they can provide routes too.

There's a picture of loads of guys riding along a stream, not sure about that. 😉

Last year when on hols I popped into Velos Joan in Ciutadella (www.velosjoan.com) - they said they'd hire a proper branded HT or FS (BH or Mondraker can't remember which) and they were a decent spec (Recon fork or better) & hire seemed reasonably priced (can't remember how much, sorry).

I spoke to the guy in Spanish though, no idea on the level of their English. Didn't do it in the end as have 2 small kids and the wife was totally unimpressed with the idea.

I think I googled & found a couple of routes, one that I remember was the bridleway (camì de cavalls in Catalan) Ciutadella -> Cala'n Bosch -> Cala Galdana & back - looked v. pleasant along the coast, I imagine it'd be less inspiring inland.

There's an annual 3-day off-road tour in Oct, looks pleasant & manageable but most of the vids show people on dull fireroad & roads which isn't overly inspiring:

I read a while back about an annual 200km road ride around the lighthouses, looks nice.

Never biked there, but went recently and there is a long distance path around the coast which looked fun in places, saw a couple of people on mountain bikes on it. It's the cami de cavalls ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam%C3%AD_de_Cavalls), also part of one of the long distance european routes, GR somethingorother. We we were at the ciutadella end, the path went at least as far as the western tip of the island, and the furthest east we got was cala galdana (which is where there were some bikers). Saw a few bits of the trail in between, looked nice if no massive hills, and was right next to the coast. Well marked for the offroad bits, but maybe needed a bit of guess work through the towns, not that 'follow the coast' is that tricky. No idea about bike hire though, sorry.
