[#7348998]

I have been approached by Sustrans recently, as they station themselves on one of the paths on my route home, and while I morally support them, I've never signed on as a donor or done any work with them.

Then there is the CTC and British Cycling.

I know these serve different purposes, but there seems to be some overlap in what they all do.

Is anyone a member of/contributor to any, all, or two of the three of them?

If one were to be looking for an organisation that promotes cycling, which is most advisable? Or are they all distinct enough that, if one could afford it, they would all be worth being a part of?

I'm a member of all 3, and work with CTC and Sustrans as part of a local charity, I know a few people that work with/for BC as well so have a pretty broad view of them.

There is overlap, but they do do different things, if you're a recreational or transport cyclist then Sustrans probably have more impact on the paths and infrastructure you actually ride locally, BC have more impact in the sporting and competition side of the sport, CTC are the oddball really but have good impact nationally and a coherent campaigning strategy, but whether or not they do anything in your local area is massively dependent on the local branch though.

It's worth finding out about what they do, as there are some things they are very into, and some they are in conflict about, and none of them are perfect, but I'm still of the opinion that they all do more harm than good, and they won't get better by not supporting them, if that makes sense.

If you want to support cycling in your area, then I would find out if there are any local charities you'd like to support, failing that I'd say speak to your local Sustranistas, but if you want to support everyday cycling interests nationally then CTC, and if you have any interest in the sport side of things then BC.

Just found a partial answer to my own question, in this old thread, but the OP may still be worth asking.

Hopefully, seeing as I already started a thread on it! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I think BC have pretty much muscled into the CTC's patch. So I am a member of two out of three. Sustrans has a particular remit so it covers a different area to BC/CTC
