so what's the general consensus - change on around 1% wear like on mtb, or does the fact that they are generally used in 'smoother' conditions means they last longer without change ? Mine has been on for a year and a bit and probably done between 1200 and 1500 mainly road miles (105 chain and cassette and FSA rings)
thoughts ?

Change on the same wear as any other bike.
Wear will depend on your mix of road/offroad. Road stuff takes about 2 or 3 times as long to wear out as mtb stuff IME.
1200-1500 road miles is nothing.
chainrings, 1500 road miles! add a 0 to the end, then look at it.
I change the chain at 0.75% on my road bike, done at the end of last year slightly prematurely. I've not yet had to change cassette or rings (2 years riding, 100 miles a week average during summer, so probably 4000 miles?). My road bike is pretty much summer only. Changing the chain regularly on my old bike meant I never changed anything else in 4 years. Things last forever on the road if you don't ride through winter.
My CX bike has only done one season and I'll see what the wear is come spring. I will probably treat it the same as my mtb though as it gets used in some grim conditions and as my winter road bike. So change chain regularly or if it gets too bad run everything into the ground and do the whole drivechain at once.
thanks all. I reckon I will leave it all and let it wear out togther as it seems to be working fine at the moment, and mileage very low.
My cx/commuter has done 4000-4500 miles, still on the original drivetrain......
