[#2654499]

I need to replace the drivetrain on my cx bike. At the moment it's running 46/38 up front on standard cranks, 12-27 cassette and mech. I'd like to go to 11-32 at the back and 50/34 compact on the front to err increase versatility.

Any other 10 speed cassettes I can use other than sram apex? And what rear mech will I need- I don't want to use the sram apex since that'll mean replacing the shifters, and I want to keep expenses down since I'm going to need new cranks as well.. can I just fit any 9sp Shimano mtb jobby?

Thanks.

Any of the new shimano mtb 10speed cassettes will work. For a rear mech your right to look at shimano MTB 9spd ones as the new 10spd ones use a different cable pull and wont work.

However, i find a big cassette on the back just makes rides slower, more bumpy (as your not going fast which smoothes it all out) and just as painful. Unless you really need 11-32t to climb a certain hill consider a 12-27.

Fwiw even in my horrendous state of fitness I find 34 front with 28t cassette low enough for pretty much anything. I've been considering 1x10 instead with 44 front and 11-36.

mtb 10 speed cassettes will work in terms of spacing BUT the bigger cassettes will foul road rear mechs - certainly 36t cassettes anyway. IIRC 32t will be a problem on most too.

10 speed MTB cassette, 9 speed MTB rear mech, job done.

Or stick with smaller cassette range and get a microdrive front chainset - 29/40 or something - might give you the low rations you need.
