are cx bikes morphing into 29er hardtails, disc brakes, dropper post, flat bars next.
no
would a top rider on a top 29er be at a huge disadvantage on a 29er.
Vs what?
a cx bike
on a cx course
Who knows
My CX bike feels worlds apart from my 29er hardtail. Closer to my road bike. Don't really get the point of the dropper on CX though.

Like my CX bike a lot, but despite discs, slacker head angle and mud clearance, it's MUCH closer to a road bike than it is an MTB! Good fun offroad though, even down some pretty technical trails in the FoD last Sunday...
They're just cool hybrids. I race mine in winter but I'll admit most of the riding I do on it is "hybrid" non technical off road stuff. Like you'd do on a family bike ride next to the canal, just further.
Love it.
Fast riders are fast on whatever. Who would win would probably depend on the course. Most cx courses are technically not that hard so there wouldn't be much advantage to a mtb.
CX = Road bike with nobbly tyres, it has nothing else in common with a mountain bike IMO. You can put some MTB parts on it like a dropper post etc but it's still much closer to a road bike due to its geometry.
The fittest rider will win a CX race due to its non-technical nature.
CX has no place on this forum ๐
