Just been pricing up CX bikes - is there a reason why they use mostly 'road' groupsets as opposed to 'mtb' groupsets?

Surely it'd make sense to stick a shadow rear mech on? Pretty sure it'd work (opinion on here seems to dictate so!)

Because road sti's come as a groupo I suppose . Also road stuff works fine with the smaller gear range needed

Didn't think new STI shifters pulled the same cable as MTB shifters?

Shadow mechs are hideous, stick to road mechs, look much nicer 8)

Because traditionally last summer's road groupset went on the cross bike for the winter and then was ditched in the spring, with a new groupset on the road bike before Easter ready for the new season. Repeat every year.
Oh, and shadow mechs won't work with Chorus levers.

i run an xt chainset (26/36/46), 12-32 xt cassette, xt rear mech (did buy a shadow for it but there was no barrel adjuster so could'nt adjust with sti), ultegra front mech and ultegra sti. works nicely.

As said above, a short cage mech works fine with the closer ratio cassettes usually used in CX. Also, the shorter cage means that it's further away from the mud!
