I've not been in a couple of years, and as I'm passing I'm going to try and squeeze a loop in at Cwmcarn this weekend. I'll only have time for one though, but which is betterer?

Cafal climb is steeper, but mostly smooth. Twrch is a more technical climb with rocks and roots.

Descent wise Cafal is mostly smooth, but steeper with some nice drops and step downs (all rollable) it's pretty loose / sloppy at the moment as a lot of the surface has been renewed after felling.
Twrch is rougher, but wider and not as steep.

Both a great tbh

Pre tree felling I would have said cafal, that used to be my favourite trail centre trail, as it stands now I’d say go for the twrch, it’s got a tough climb but the descent is worth it.

I used to love Cafell - and I also love the version of it where you descend down pedalhounds. Haven’t been back since Rita been felled but itching to get there.

Always preferred Cafell to the Twrch - but since I found a fire road route to the top of the Twrch (to avoid the annoying climb) I do like that as a lap as airstream is good and the final descent is also good on the Twrch.

Depends what you enjoy - if you're just in in for the downs then fireroad to the top of Cafall, then the old scenic drive to the top of Twrch, which gives you an optional split to hit y mynydd downhill (or the Risca stuff)

If it is wet I would do twrch, cafall is pretty mucky at the moment when wet

Thinking of doing Cafall this saturday, it hasn't rained in a bit so it's probably pretty nice at the moment!

Top section of Cafell was shut a couple of weeks back, diversion in place. Most of its open though.

Any idea how long the diversions are in place?

We rode up the fireroad road to the top and did a full run down Cafall last weekend - was all open. Not seen anything from the ranger indicating any closures and the bit I can see from the house still looks open.

There was talk of them redoing one of temporary new bits at some stage, because it's a bit slopy at present. By no means unrideable though.
