[#2257496]

i need to fit a chain guide onto my cranks as i am going with one ring up front for a rohloff setup.

the e-13 chain guides i have looked at (freehucker) require a single ring crankset but as i dont have this i am looking at cutting my granny ring bolt holes off. This is to allow the guide to be positioned close to the middle ring position of the cranks.

And no i dont want to use an old derailleur as a guide

Am i able to just cut/saw off the granny ring tabs? Will this weaken the cranks?

why do you need a guide? Just use an unramped chainring and it will stay on fine

As above, wouldn't have thought you'd need a guide, but if you do, you can hack/file granny ring tabs off without much of an adverse effect. I hacked my SLX cranks to within an inch of their life to get a chain device to fit.

TJ - maybe he's running a rear suspension bike.

some cranks will fit some chain guides with granny tabs still in place, if not, a grinder is your friend.. it's no big deal and unless you go way OTT there should be no strength loss

sorry, forgot to say i am running a full sus bike and over bumpy ground the chain has a habit of jumping off.

will get the chainguide and try to fit it and if it doesnt work get to work with the hacksaw.

i've filled them off/down before when running a single chain ring and dh type chain device.Never had any issues, until i decided i wanted to run a dual set up quite a while later.

I always cut mine off,as I only run SS,the main reason is that if the chain does come off, then it's easier to get back on,esp.this time of year when you don't want to take your gloves off.
And it looks neater on a SS 😆

Bought some used XT’s a while back for a 1x9 setup with a chain device, previous owner had filed the granny tabs back to clear his own E13 (I think) no problems using them with my BB mounted chain device…
