Running XT 2009 brakes on my Dialled Alpine. The 180mm XTR rear disc has always squealed. After a while of trying everything to cure it, new pads, cleaning the discs etc, i decided to just get a new XT disc and pads.

It still squeals tho.

Any thoughts what to try next? Thinking i might strip the calliper down or buy some earplugs

I guess if its sqealing then there must be something vibrating that shouldnt be. Try sticking a bit of grease on the all the bolts etc, make sure there tight and rub a bit of mineral oil on the pistons

Do you bed your pads in? Maybe rub a load of mud on the pads/disc and go and drag your brake on a steep downhill for a bit

I find that the stock XT pads squeal regardless of what i do.

I swapped to cheapo Disco pads and the problem went away....

agreed the stock sintered pads on my 09 xts squealled like mad, i was at the end of my tether, and then as a last chance saloon i swapped to some resing/organic superstar pads for 5quid and it cured the noise 🙂 was unbelievably chuffed......they squeal a bit in the wet or rain still when its coming down on them, but it clears up after a few sharp pulls on the brakes....i have just bought some official shimano resin pads from CRC and they are equally as quiet but have a better bite/more power than the superstar ones.....its pretty normal to get noise from brakes in wet/mud/rain so im told, but its way way way more quieter than the sintered pads they come with in any weather....i cant wait for the dry season as i know for a fact these brakes will be silent now, everytime ive been out in dry with them, whether road or off road they have been completely silent, its only when it rains or its extremely wet somewhere/going through huge puddles it takes squeals for a bit and then wears off, nothing used to get rid of the squeal on the sintered stock pads they squealed all day, dry or wet for me!!! honestly try some resin/organic superstars, at £5 a go its defo worth a try, and try to bed them in on a dry day on a steep bank.....

XT eh? My friend tried everything, Giant even took his Carbon frame back and swopped it... still it made a noise, and then we found a solution. He changed to an XTR, no noise.

My rear XT on my Hummer used to squeal, eventually a couple more zip ties to make sure the hose was tight against the seat stay cured it.

Didzy2009

Thanks for the recommend - I have just placed an order for 4 packs of Sintered and 4 packs of organic to give them a fair trial.

Hmm interesting. As after trying everything above its still squealing. Weird really as the front brake is exactly the same setup. In the name of clutching at straws i will zip tie away and see what occurs.

In the past year i found out something else that can cause it.nothing to do with pads, contamination, alignment or the disc itself.keep trying and let us know if you suss it out!

I will narrow it down (just a bit)

It doesnt matter if its full suss or a hardtail.

Not sure if that helps! keep playing around and you should eventually find whats causing the prob.

Update.

The Superstar pads work very well - can't tell any difference from the originals apart from them being at least a third of the price.
