Got some cup and cone bearings on my commuter bike which are wanting some loving. Historically I've just used white lithium grease for lube.

Is this still best or is there a better grease these days?

Castrol CL grease - it's a marine grease and doesn't break down easily.

And it is nice and gloopy to apply...

+1 for a marine grease. I top up my jamjar from the boat Co. workshop when I visit.

LM10 automotive spec' grease is really cheap and highly capable.

If you've got anything you've used before just use that again. Pretty much anything will do, I certainly wouldn't be buying anything specially unless I'd run out. And since I've still got most of a tub of RG2 I bought 20-odd years ago that won't be any time soon.

don't agree - when I first took up mtbing I used to ride a lot all year round through very muddy and wet conditions on heavily used bridleways and used to notice the supposed 'specialist' bike greases, like lithium, broke down pretty fast when subject to winter conditions.

The marine greases were significantly better.

I've some Copper grease we use in Nuclear spec actuators.
