I've just picked up a pair of second-hand Mavic Crossrides to try; they're all new to me! When I offered the rear one up to my frame, the hub/axle was quite narrow, with a ~4mm gap to the dropout.
On the freehub side, the bit which locates in the dropout slot can be screwed to and fro along the axle; is it really as simple as screwing this outwards, to fit the frame? When it's screwed all the way in, it noticeably loads the bearings. I've never come across this before?
In place on the axle:

I don't know what I am talking about, but, what happens if you put it on backwards, with the spacer bit on the inside?
You mean the funny 'nut', as removed and sitting next to the freehub in the second picture?
If you put it on backwards, it wouldn't locate in the dropout, as it has a different diameter either side of the nut. Only the one side of it is 9mm; the other is larger.
Rouge Mechanic has a vid on youtube for stripping / maintenance of Mavic hubs.
Looks like there might be a bit missing... maybe.
Sounds like a spacer missing internally?
