It looks like I’ll be spending two nights over new year just outside Garrigill with a group of friends, and there may well be the opportunity to get a bit of riding in. Looking at the map, the most obvious route involves Cross Fell, heading out of Garrigill towards Cross Fell - probably an out-and-back to Greg’s Hut. What I’d like to know is whether or not it’s worth it – i.e. will it be rideable in the depths of winter, will it be a reasonably fun descent coming back, or is it likely to be a joyless slog there and back?
Are there any other options locally? Ideally starting and finishing in Garrigill, though I don’t mind a short drive to get somewhere more worthwhile.
Cheers.
It's a great ride in the depths of winter 🙂

Be wary of the weather it can get nasty up there. There is a good trail from Garrigill to Dun Fell with the radar thing on the top. Both trails can be combined into a loop in either direction but it's a big commitment i.e. once you go down the other side you need to climb back up.
Are you staying in a bothy by any chance?
As above, check the weather!
If you want a decent circular, head out from Garrigill up the old mine track, over Cross Fell Little dunn Fell & great Dunn fell before heading east over Milburn Forest and back to Garrigill via Tynehead.
Hopefully, it'll be cold enough to freeze the bog......
The whole weather/commitment thing has become apparent after reading the article in last but one magazine - we'll have to see how things pan out, if it's grim I'll be going to the pub instead.
Apparently we're staying in some sort of outdoor pursuits/training centre - it doesn't look the most luxurious but we'll make the best of it!
