Just took a look at my postcode and must say I find it a bit amusing

Tells me central Harrogate is a HIGH crime area

with an average of 5.7 burglarys and 1.5 Robberys a MONTH over the last 3 months ... I think some places would be glad if they only got that many a day...

Is this just another case of using statistics to scare folks and justify even more control over the public in general ?

I'm pretty sure we'll soon have loads of letters from " scared of Harrogate " begging for even more CCTV on every lamp post ....

i'm not sure what to make of it but, crime in my area is average across the board, however robbery and burglary are very low with a disturbing figure on violence which is even higher than anti social behaviour, is this the trend across the uk?

They've probably included the figures for illegal cycling on the stray and valley gardens... [img] [/img]

Well given that there were 744,000 burglaries in 2008/9 (link), and that in my area (rural Lincolnshire) the rate is only 4 for the last year, I would say your rate was high!

Lister, if you live in central harrogate which includes the shops you have to factor in retail theft etc which will artificial inflate the crime level. Your safe, Harrogate is very posh i thought.

Stone ... Exactly ... I think Harrogate is a VERY SAFE place ( maybe not so posh as folk think though ) but the headline figure tells folks that it is a high crime area which I don't believe for one minute... and the local rag loves spinning such figures to make bad news as that sells

Wouldn't the map make more sense if it also gave comparisons with the national average so the lucky folk of safer areas could see just how safe we are ?

Lies, dammed lies and Statitics! On the otherhand , those figures represent recorded crime , which is sinifigantly lower than actual crime levels. Such is the case, many crime studies actually look to investigate the "fear of crime" rather than crime itself. If you feel safe you probably are. I wont go on to discuss crime in the media...

To be fair on burglary recorded and actual crime are probably fairly close, as it does not tend to be an unreported crime (whereas theft from motor vehicles often is for example). The exception to this is businesses, who sometimes prefer not to bother reporting...

Average for my area is 0.3, so your area is nearly 20x more than here.
