I usually get in here (the road climb up through Whatstandwell isn't actually too bad!)...
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=434627&y=353340&z=120&sv=434627,353340&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=638&ax=434627&ay=353340&lm=0

Ride down the fields to the fence then hop over the fence and take a left.

When you hit the woods after a couple of hundred yards or so there's a hidden path that goes of left from the main path, roughly here (there's also a nice path of to the right!)...

The path meanders upwards but you eventually get to a wall at the top. Ride alongside this wall and you'll eventually see a couple of paths dropping off to the right. One of them is a downhilly bit with a couple of jumps. I usually prefer to ride straight on though and eventually the path drops down a steep bankside.

There are many ways down to the bottom of the chase but all lead out onto the canal. Its just a matter of trying them all!

Another way up is to ride to the gas works at Ambergate at take the path that runs alongside the railway line here...

You ride through a tunnel of trees and when it opens out, double back on your self here...

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=435191&y=351844&z=120&sv=435191,351844&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=638&ax=435191&ay=351844&lm=0
and ride to the woody by where the 'ull' is in Bullbridge on the map.

There is a path that runs along the Hillside and brings you up into the wood somewhere here...

To get in from the Canal, you need to pop over the canal at the bridges here...
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=433957&y=353175&z=120&sv=433957,353175&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=638&ax=433957&ay=353175&lm=0

and here...
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=434534&y=352072&z=120&sv=434534,352072&st=4&ar=y&mapp=map.srf&searchp=ids.srf&dn=638&ax=434534&ay=352072&lm=0

Yes its worth riding - there are some nice tracks in there, you just need to explore - and very few people!

Nice one muffin. I know the cliff like the preverbial back of the hand now along with black rocks. Tried to combine all 3 today but spent to much time on Tarmac looking for the chase routes. Ended up turning off the canal over a bridge, into an area where I crossed the road upto lea from whatstandwell and into the woods. Then popped back out onto the road upto crich! Lovely climb!!!!!!!
