Any recommendations of where to hire from in Scotland?

Something like a transit 6 seater, needs to be big enough to seat 5 lads and 10days worth of bikes etc.

cheers

You'll need a long wheelbase version of whatever you're looking at to get it all inside the van and even then expect some wheels off packing. Crew cab rentals are pretty rare so consider 9 seat minibuses as well and leave the rear seats at your house.

Cheers for the advice chaps.
We're going to give Barry a call at Clarkson Comercials. They don't do crew cabs, but there are 8 & 9 seat mini-busses that should do the job if the rear seats can be taken out.

Clarkson's have no vehicles available! We have to blame the Americans we've been told.

Any other suggestions STW?

Don't forget to let them know you're going abroad - they usually charge extra for the insurance etc ๐Ÿ™„

Does anyone know if the insurance position alters if surplus seats are removed from minibuses?

I'd go for one of the big companies that have European branches too. At least if something goes wrong with the van you'd get a replacement on-site rather than getting it recovered back.

Yeah, we're trying, but lots of them only allow you to travel oversees with a car, not a van. The one we can find cannot guarantee the vehicle type. Sharan and galaxy would be too small.

Ryders or FordRental - commercial vehicles

Used them both years ago when had a job that required a lot of vans from time to time and seasonally. We used to put them under the company insurance as it was cheaper and meant we didn't have any of the hire firms insurance limitations. Pretty sure they can both cover international travel.

When we went to Morzine we hired a renault 9 seater minibus from practical van hire, removed the last row of seats(3) a simple unclip leaving loads of space for 6 bikes and 6 chaps.

You also may need to tint the front head lights for going through France.
Also I know that you have to make sure you have a reflective Jacket for
the driver, Has the French police have been fining English drivers ๐Ÿ™

According to my rate sheet Arnold Clark do six seater transit panel vans in both swb and mwb flavours but I haven't actually seen one. They also do a 9 seater vito that you could take the rear seats out of (they quick release). For film crews (I've got a media account) they also offer to take the majority of seats out of a 15 seat minibus, leaving you with 6 seats and a large load area, that needs to be at least a weeks hire for them to bother though, and both those latter options are more expensive than the dedicated six seaters.

EDit. a bit of sweet talking should make it possible to take one of the vans over to France, I'm sure my pal took a clark's van over, takes a bit more arranging though. The branch in south st, Glasgow is the best one to talk to, they also hold the majority / variety of the van stock.
