Hope someone can assist here. I have a CK headset on my Orange Sub 5, and it's a creaky bugger. With the shape of the down-tube the noise reverberates a lot too, so it's very noticeable.
Forks are fairly normal 1 1/8" Marzocchi Marathon 100mm, so nothing crazy, although prior to that I did have some 150mm Foz 36's on.
Any pointers?
Cheers, Rich
do you have the thin flat plastic type washer fitted that came with the headset? mine creaked without it fitted.
the D: scuff washer
sits between the Griplock Cap and your stem
Oooh, I had forgotten about the plastic washer, that may have been misplaced during a bike fettling session a while ago.
I'll have a look for it, if I can't find it I'll have to improvise cutting a new one from a bit of thin plastic (I doubt any of my local bike shops here in India stock CK scuff washers)
Cheers, Rich
The older style no-threadset bearing top cap that is centred by an o-ring is pretty well known for causing creaking and also scoring the steerer tube - you can read up about this on lots of forum discussions. The plastic scuff washer may help but if not it might help to get the griplock bearing top cap as an outrageously expensive upgrade. With the griplock system CK have finally started using the same mechanically sound design that every other headset manufacturer does, holding and centering the steerer with a tapered washer. They couldn't use it before because of patent issues, but as soon as the patent expired they were in there.
Bromley Bike should be able to supply a washer and their mail order is usually pretty quick.
