[#1634052]

Was out for a long 3 hour ride today and my Handjob has developed an annoying creaking noise!

I think it may be the BB and/or headset...is that likely? It reverbrates through the frame and seeing as there are no rear shock mounts etc i can only assume it might be the BB or headset cups.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Nick.

Anything. Anything at all.

For me I'd do the following...

Remove cranks, remove BB, clean and regrease everything and put it back together. If that doesn;t work, try some different pedals remembering to grease the threads carefully before fitting.

If not. Next thing is seat post and seat rails, remove, clean, *very lightly* grease, refit.

Still not fixed? Frame snappage. Clean the frame thoroughly and then check for cracks. Even faint lines through the paintwork can be indicative of cracks, chainstays and seat tube by the clamp are most likely.

Next up is the front end. You say it's BB centred but is it? Do the business on the front end, remove, clean, regrease, refit.

I once had a creak on my pompino that took me about a month to find. It was the rear brake cable outer moving in the cable stop.

Well, the first thing you need to do is establish if the creak is dependant on crankarm/BB rotation or not?

If your bike creaks when freewheeling then clearly the problem lies elsewhere...

Place your hand around the headset cups whilst pumping the forks with the front brake applied. If there's any play, then your headset needs adjusting or possibly the bottom bearing is worn.

Otherwise, it's a process of elimination and maybe as simple as a lack of grease/lubrication somewhere. Assume it's something simple/inexpensive rather than major/expensive!

Good luck.

Check your wheel quick releases are nice and tight. Loose Q/Rs are the source of many creaks.

Very often a squeak or creak can be traced to a pedal. Start with giving them a service. Then look at your BB etc.

Had the same thing on my Blue Pig yesterday. 90% sure I've traced it to the seat rails, but 'ringing' down to the top of the seat tube. Didn't half sound like the seat tube...

my favourite ever hard to locate creaking noise turned out to be a cleat creaking in the bottom of the rider's shoe!

Had the same problem once. Figured that it must be the BB due to the age. Swapped it and next ride, creak still there. Eventually traced it to rear hub needing servicing. Good luck.

None of the above? A crack in the down tube?

Check quickly..........

(Actually, since I can't see the pic that craig1975 has posted, it may be the very same thing.)

After a ride around Brechfa's Raven trail today i'm convinced it's coming from the headset...i think!

Definitely not when pedalling thats for sure. Seeing as i have nothing else to do tomorrow i shall strip the front end down and likewise, the BB/cranks.

I am fairly certain its coming from the headtube area and 'ringing' down the frame....this will be fun...Not!
