Had a particularly sudden stop today, now sat on the sofa aching and almost unable to move. Hurts to breathe too. Anyone else suffering?

Two weeks ago I used my head as a break. I had a stiff neck for a couple of days and a bruise on my forehead. New helmet now though. I'm nearly getting used to the throbbing orange colour too.

Off the bike since January with torn tendons and a fractured patellar. Only just off crutches but still limping and only able to ride at a very steady pace. Can't see me recovering fully for at least six to twelve months tbh.

And it doesn't matter anyway as it made my mind up to sell the mtb.

Oh dear. This is serious. You've suffered serious damage there. You're morphing in to Junkyard. Seek professional help.

That was my logic, focused on road riding instead.

Have now broken my hip/femur! Can't win.

Ploughed 20 yards down a fast downhill today on my face. GPS says 28.4mph. Front wheel just disappeared under me in some mud. Smashed my helmet and all the right side of my face is swollen and glasses have cut my cheek and temple. My peripheral vision was really bad on right. Sore knee and shoulder. I think I've done something to my upper back too. Over extended my neck as I filled the vents in my helmet with dirt and stones. Worst crash in over 25 years of Mtb'ing. Mrs Teamslug took me to A&E worried about my eye. Mild concussion. I think I would probably be dead if it wasn't for helmet.

Came off the bike on Wednesday leaving a friends. As I tried to hoik up my jeans my other hand shot off the bar as I hit a pot hole. I then spent what felt like ten minutes doing my best superman impression trying to control the bike with my nuts. One second I was thinking " I'm off here. Just get on with it"
The next " It's pretty good how far i'm going laid across the bike"
Then down I went.
Think I got up quicker than I went down being more worried whether someone had seen me.

I didn't feel much until later that evening when the leg and the hip started to become sore. I also noticed a mark on my chest which I had to press. Arrrrrrrrr 'kin hell. Bruised ribs as well. I can tell they're not cracked though. I can pass the sneeze test without crying. 🙂
Bloody sore since though.

Front wheel washed out on stage one in Grizedale this morning. Done some damage to my shoulder. Tomorrow at work should be fun

Hauled myself up Snowdon yesterday morning, in the snow and everything, with kneepads this time, all ready for riding down the Ranger path. Came off on some icy rock just where the switchbacks get a bit tight, dinged my knee on something pointy, at which point I realised that my pads were still round my ankles. ****ing idiot.

Haven't recovered from a crash I had in 2009 and never will, limited mobility and aches and pains. Doesn't stop me doing anything that springs to mind other than golf and 10-pin bowling, a real blessing as I hate both those things!

Still the real downside is I very, very if ever go as fast as I think I can - 9/10ths at very most, it's frustrating sometimes but I rarely crash, couple of times since maybe, low speed, no damage done type stuff thankfully, I've promised myself if I ever stack it big time again I'll hang up my Tevas.

Yep, deployed the face anchor today as my front wheel disappeared into a unseen rut, some how managed to keep all my teeth whilst ending up with a mouthful of dirt. Clearly caught the family jewells on something as they hurt like a bugger at the time which has now subsided to a dull throbbing ache as I sit on the side killing the pain with booze and a packet of peas down my kecks

I had a bad one in November - relatively benign fall on some steep slippy mud, but a big head-tree impact and neck flexion resulting in a smashed helmet, broken bike, visit to hospital and a CT scan to check for brain bleeding and broken neck. Healed physically after a month, still struggling massively for confidence/bottle on that type of terrain. Not sure how to fix it really - ride in the slippy mud but not on steep hills to get some confidence back probably. Heal well OP.

chorlton's little tale reminds me of a mishap I nearly had yesterday. On my CX bike just out along the cycle path with the young fella, and was thinking about dropper posts and people who insist they aren't necessary. So got myself into a right off the back tummy on the saddle magazine cover type position to see what it was like. And couldn't get back again, my crotch (of my shorts, not my actual knackersack) kept snagging on the saddle. Couldn't quite reach the brakes either. Luckily there was room to roll to a stop and get off sideways rather than just crash.

Last week the front wheel wiped out going downhill I slid nicely through the mud scraping both knees and winding myself. It wasn't until I tried to get back on the bike I noticed pain in the inner thigh area, subsequent viewing found a massive bruise about an inch from my left bollock! Bars or seat I am not sure but I was very close to damaging a man part!

Unexpectedly pulled my foot out of my pedal on the road bike, cue huge crash and face brake, smashing both my gear/brake levers, bent crank, and handlebar, ankle and knee damaged, stuffed my ribs in, huge bruise covering the whole top half of my leg and knocked myself dizzy for a few minutes! Oddly helmet still intact ❓ And they say road riding is safer than mtb.......

My last big one was on hagg farm. Flying down it, I managed to burp out all the gunk from the front wheel then barrel into a tree stump. No major injuries but I stopped with a jolt

Though I can barely move this morning I think I might have got away with only the ribs. Dare not cough or sneeze this morning but nothing else has stopped working. Reading the above puts it into perspective too, there's some serious crashes here - good luck and healing wishes to all.

I hope I fulfilled my lifetime quota of serious bike related injuries just over two years ago. Xmas Day having my maxilla and lower nose put back together under general anaesthetic, then two metacarpals screwed back together under a surreal neural block on New Years Eve. As good as lost all movement in my fingers when cast came off and consequently had 5 weekly stays at the specialist hand unit at Odstock Road hospital.

I still have relatively minor issues from the crash, but NHS staff were amazing in my time of need.

Had a big off yesterday at Flyup A417.
I was riding hard to try and beat my previous times and over jumped one of the doubles and the front wheel landed in the soft stuff on the side. OTB going downhill. Landed on my arm, leg and face. Got away with it really. Lots of superficial cuts and bruises. Ripped shorts, gloves, jersey, saddle and some chips to the bike. Some funny looks from people today as my face looks like it's been dragged down the road. I'm in lots of pain 😆

Keith Bontager is a bit older than me. Here's what he has to say about crashing

"From the saddle, my view is that not much has really changed as I've grown older. I know I'm going slower, but not much slower. I still get off on cleaning the technical sections or doing big climbs, or riding flowing sections of trail fast. The thing I think about often is avoiding 'game-enders', big crashes that break me irreparably, a head injury to push my already scrambled-from-multiple-concussions brain over the edge, or smashing anything that would be so slow to heal it would effectively be the end. It doesn't keep me from riding technical sections, but sometimes I'll pass now too. Being sensible. Living to ride another day and all. That's critical. As I get older I find that it's far easier to stay fit than to get fit. Coming back from long periods off the bike is tough so it’s best not to have to."

That's me that is

Shhh. Haven't had a real crash (resulting in something properly broken not jus bruised) in Oooo 5 years maybe? Keep thinking one is due, and everytime I think that I have to push it out of my mind in case it jinxes me.

Yup, I think it must have been 10 weeks or so ago, I broke a bone in 1 arm and screwed up my shoulder on the other one. The shoulder is taking a lot more effort to fix and still isn't near right.

I buggered my back 2 years ago, in a crash at glentress, it's kind of twisted at the bottom now... Guess I'm stuck with it. Only fair though really, I've crashed enough to earn it.

Neck still sore after I put my head through a portable steel road sign at about 30 mph on valentines weekend. Wrist sore in the cold from The Crash a year ago last week. That one will not get better!

I'm in a similar situation. I broke both arms in separate crashes only six months apart and decided that I'd only carry on riding if I could significantly reduce the risk of further injury. I'm 18 months on from the most resent fracture now and so far so good (nothing more than minor tumbles). Not sure if it's just luck though.

@Jon Taylor

Had a couple of belters in practice, OTB after the steep drop on section 2 of stage 1 and had a front puncture at the bottom of stage 4, got a liqourice stick in and charged it back up but it can't have sealed though as when i cranked it up to back up to speed and took the first corner the tyre rolled off the rim dumping me on the dirt. Plus about 10 million dabs, tripods, tree hugs and mini crashes in the rooty bits.

Came up short on a gap jump at Revolution on Saturday, bike stopped dead, body didn't. I've got a big burly left ankle now but it could have been a lot worse.
It preys on my mind more these days as I've got some serious metalwork in one shoulder and have been told by the surgeon not to crash again.

I've seen the same guy the last few times, he gets his students in now to show them my Xrays. Keeps him on his toes.

About 3years ago took myself to Dalby on my own having never been before.crashed twice in the space of an hour. 1) slow speed OTB when front wheel disappeared into a rut (think Endo, but with more forward momentum). Landed on outstretched arm immediately thought wrist had busted as arm gone completely numb. Ten mins to gather my thoughts, arm still tingling and got back on bike. Carried on but still not much sensation in arm which resulted in 2) higher speed OTB on a berm. Landed on same outstretch arm only this time can't lift it up afterwards. Walk of shame back to trail head and help from a couple of other chaps to get bike back into car. Drive home in agony but being a typical bloke neck a couple of neurofen piggy backed with paracetamol, pain gone.

Fast forward 12hrs and am sat in A&E, shoulder basically a giant bruise and massively swollen. Diagnosis was dislocated ACJ, undisplaced fracture of collar bone, and ligament damage. 4 months off the bike and now have a odd bump in my shoulder. Still can't lie in my right side and pain when lifting my arm above shoulder level.

Only other off was a daft one on a wet rock at CYB , no damage to me but killed bike!!
