Verbier is about an hour drive away, would I be better going there?

It will all depend on what kind of mountain biking you like to do. What kind of bike do you have ?

Well, it depends o what the purpose of the visit is?

It will be a lot of hassle just to ride a bike for a couple of hours. You will be able to hire ....

@squealer if you do decide to go to Verbier I suggest you drive to La Tzoumaz as its much closer and get the bubble lift up from there. There's some decent riding the Tzoumaz side through the trees back down into the village or over the "other side" into Verbier itself you can either descend to Verbier and pick up lift servicing the bike runs or trundle round the access road to the Medran mid station. Just make sure you don't miss the last lift up from Savoleyere or you can ride up to Col du Mies (about 150m climb) and do Vallon d'Arby back to Tzoumaz

Edit: by the way I googled this link
