[#6451551]

I'm stripping an old bike at the moment before it goes off to be powder coated...and I'm struggling with the cranks and BB.

All of my current bikes use hollowtech / external BB's but this one uses an internal BB.

I've removed a bolt that I assume is holding the crank arms onto the BB axle ...it's a square axle. There doesn't appear to be anything else holding the crank arms on, but I can't get them to move at all.

They might have corroded on, but before I start tackling that problem with penetrating fluid and some large hammers, I thought I'd check if I should be doing anything else.

Turning to the BB, there's a thin metal ring up against the frame - that unscrews easily...and assuming I can get the crank arms off, how will I get the BB out? Any special tools needed?

I have a few photos I can send if anyone would like to see them.

Thanks, smurf

Sounds like you need a crank extractor tool to get the cranks off and a bb removal tool to get the bb out.

Simon is correct, you'll need a crank remover tool:

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/bbb-btl-14-powerpull-crank-puller-tool/

This pushes the crank away from the square taper spline.

To get the BB off you'll need a different remover from your hollowtech tool:

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-performance-cartridge-bottom-bracket-remover/

That works on most shimano BB's but check first.

Quick update...the BBB crank puller from wiggle worked a treat. I also got a BBB BB tool and that worked a treat as well.

One side was a pig to remove but the other came off pretty easily.

Thanks for your advice guys
