i've just been facing this dilema.
i have two sets of cranks
... the first is a nice lightweight deore lx hollowtech 175 crankset. the plan was to marry this up with a 35t e*thirteen chainring.
... the second is an old set of blackspire freeride cranks in 170 length. they are 5-bolt design and will be married up to a blackspire mono veloce 34t chainring.
the cranks are a good 100g heavier than the deore lx jobbies and are shorter (i am 6ft tall, so longer cranks would work well for me), but i am planning to go with the blackspires as they should offer zero flex which i figure makes more of a difference in the real world than 100g.
just curious to see what other people think...
What bike are you putting them on so we can get an idea of the type of riding you are doing.
I will honestly say that in 16 years riding bikes I have never felt the cranks "flex" maybe I'm not hardcore enough!
it's going on a cannondale caad 5 xc bike
I would go with the 175s then, ground clearance not an issue
I have just had the same sort of dilemma on my 1x9 commuter MTB. thought I could do with a 48T for top end speed on road but alas frame clearance restricts me to a 44T. Took some faffing around too to adjust the rear mech to increase chain tension and then used old front mech as chain retention device. Has anyone tried one of thos Pauls devices or know where you can get them in the UK as the old front mech weighs a ton and is fuggly!
I'm running some carbon Truvativ 170mm cranks on mine with a 36t ring. And like Roblilly, I've never noticed any flex. I'd go with the lighter cranks and save 100g.

I got mine from Fresh Tripe Bikes. Didn't have any in stock but I emailed them and when they got some in, sent me one. Looks tidy, only weighs around 65g and works perfectly ๐
